The MAN B&W ME-GIE engine is a low-speed, two-stroke, dual-fuel engine specifically developed by MAN Energy Solutions to operate on liquid ethane as the primary fuel, alongside conventional fuel oils (HFO, MGO). Based on the proven ME-GI gas injection platform, the ME-GIE engine uses a liquid gas injection system tailored for ethane, offering the same high reliability, thermal efficiency, and operational flexibility. It supports full fuel flexibility without power loss or performance degradation. The engine delivers power output ranging from 5,000 kW to over 80,000 kW, depending on configuration, and can produce torque levels exceeding 10,000 kNm in larger units. The ME-GIE engine meets IMO Tier II requirements and can achieve IMO Tier III compliance when equipped with an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) or EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system. It is primarily used in very large ethane carriers (VLECs) and LPG carriers, where cargo boil-off gas (ethane or propane) can be used as fuel contributing to reduced emissions and improved voyage economics. The engine’s ability to utilize ethane as fuel also supports the petrochemical sector’s supply chain with clean propulsion technology.
