This engine delivers exceptional performance with multiple rated speeds to enhance fuel economy and reduce noise, while its waste gated turbocharger improves low-speed torque by increasing airflow at lower engine speeds. It features a high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) system and engine control unit (ECU) for precise control of fuel injection timing and pressure. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, utilizing a urea-based additive (diesel exhaust fluid or DEF), ensures compliance with emission standards. Additionally, the engine is equipped with a catalyzed exhaust filter combining a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Its compact size simplifies installation and reduces space requirements, and the rear gear train provides direct power with options for up to two rear auxiliary drives and quiet operation. Additional features include gear-driven auxiliary drives, a 750-hour minimum operational interval, a self-adjusting poly-vee fan drive, engine-mounted or remote-mounted aftertreatment, an optional rear PTO, and a single overhead cam.

This engine boasts advanced technology to enhance performance and efficiency. The variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) adjusts exhaust pressure based on load and speed, optimizing EGR flow to deliver low-speed torque, quicker transient response, higher peak torque, and exceptional fuel economy. It is complemented by a high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) system that offers variable common-rail pressure and precise control over fuel injection timing. Exhaust filters include a catalyzed diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) that reduces carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter (PM), while the downstream diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps and oxidizes remaining PM through passive regeneration during normal operation. If passive regeneration is not feasible, active regeneration, managed by the exhaust temperature management system, is used. Cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) lowers peak combustion temperatures to reduce NOx emissions.

The JD14 engine delivers superior performance compared to 13.5L configurations, providing 14% more power and 11% greater peak torque. This enhancement enables machines to work faster, lift more, and operate with increased efficiency. It has demonstrated up to a 45% increase in harvesting capacity on John Deere X Series Combines. Additionally, the JD14 features a rear gear train that reduces noise by up to 3 decibels compared to the 13.5L engine, significantly improving operator comfort by being half as loud.

The John Deere power range has been extended with the introduction of the JD18 engine, which offers a rated power range of 522 – 677 kW (700 – 908 hp). This engine is equipped with improved model-based controls that enhance diagnostic capabilities, allowing for future prognostics and precise targeting of engine performance issues. Designed for extreme durability, the JD18 features a robust bedplate design, ensuring structural integrity and reliability for up to 20,000 hours of operation with the option for two rebuilds. Service and repair have been prioritized in the JD18’s design, incorporating hydraulic lash adjusters that provide a maintenance-free valve train and eliminate the need for lash adjustments.
